Unakite was formed approximately 1000 million years ago, by the underground solidification of magma. Because unakite solidified in the depths, it cooled only slowly and the minerals could form visible crystals. Unakite was and is mined in the American state of New Jersey, although the mines there are now almost exhausted. Unakite is also found in North Carolina, Brazil, South Africa and China.
